Abstract

In this paper I try to identify the philogenetic origin of ethics. Ethics are defined as the self imposition of a behavioural code. For this imposition to be possible there must be: a) the possibility of the distinction between the I (subject) and the Me (object); b) the capacity of imposing a mental template to reality; c) the possibility of relating things or persons in many ways, in one’s own mind (“anaphorics”); d) «theory of mind» so as to navigate the social ethical world; and e) conformism. I try to identify, in the archaeological record, the signs of the appearance of these traits. I further discuss how cooperation within kin selected groups can be extended to identitarian but not necessarily highly inbred groups and the role of religion as a factor for coopera-tion and shared identity. The chapter ends with some considerations on tribalism and its consequences.
