Abstract

Abstract: The present study investigates in an introductory way how the notions of feminine, sexuality and intellection are articulated in Thomas Aquinas and Christine de Pizan. We seek to understand, here, whether, for the authors, human sexuality has any function in the operation that apprehends the intelligible, that is, we investigate whether the normal, material and natural characteristic of a given human body in having these or those natural organs have an influence on the intellectual operation. In this investigation, moreover, we focus on the thesis stated by Aquinas according to which the human intellectual potency of the female animal is inferior to the intellectual potency of the male animal, and this, simply because the female animal is female, a totally arbitrary and inconsistent thesis, if deals from Christine’s notion of feminine. To fulfill the objective, the text has three sections. In the first, we present Christine’s thesis that the human female is perfect by nature. In the second, in turn, we analyze the thomist thesis according to which there is no proper mechanics for the generation of the viviparous female. In the third, finally, we investigate the foundations of the thomist assertion about the deficiency of female intellection.
