Proposal for a Framework of Circularity Indicators for Sustainable Agriculture
Abstract
The Circular Economy aims to transform the linear model of 'extract, transform, discard' into a continuous cycle of resource use and regeneration, promoting both sustainability and economic resilience. To support the industrial sector's transition towards circularity, there is the RESOLVE framework. However, the agricultural sector and food production also face challenges related to emissions and environmental degradation, which makes it necessary to adapt the principles of the Circular Economy to this context. Observing the absence of a widely used and recognized framework for circularity indicators in agriculture, this study proposes an adaptation of RESOLVE aimed at sustainable agriculture, with a focus on regenerative and organic practices. Based on two guides focused on food production and circularity, thirteen labels were developed to cover the complexity of the topic. These labels, which act as indicators of circularity, are: (1) Pathways to Regeneration, (2) Circular Choices, (3) From Disposal to Value, (4) Packaging that Circulates, (5) Sustainable Logistics, (6) Green Energy, (7) Responsible Water Management, (8) Efficient Solid Waste Management, (9) Collaboration and Capacity Building, (10) Digital Innovation in Agriculture, (11) Sustainable Biotechnology, (12) Circular Governance, and (13) Circular Justice. The methodology applied involved a multi-label analysis for the theoretical validation of these indicators, based on practices and evidence found in recent academic literature. As a result, it was possible to identify that the focus of circular practices in agriculture lies mainly in the search for efficient water and solid waste management. In addition, there has been an increase in the use of biotechnology as a means of promoting agricultural sustainability. On the other hand, areas such as transportation logistics, the use of green energy, training, technologies and governance present significant gaps that need to be addressed.
