Abstract
It approaches a reflection on public policies for school libraries, taking into account the social and political aspects of this area. It presents a historical segment of the school library, Brazilian education, and educational policies, as well as provides a conceptual dialogue on the subject in the study from the authors used as a theoretical reference. It examines the school library trying to understand its current context and its multiple possibilities of acting, as an educational function on the social and cultural put forward. The concern that conducts the research, is to comprehend how the work has been developed on the Municipal Office of Education in Juazeiro do Norte-CE with the suggestion of public policies for school libraries? In this way, the general aim is examining how the public policies for school libraries get in this department, intending to propose a program of action. The methodological procedures of the research classify in descriptive, exploratory, bibliographical, and documentary, delimited on the matter of study. Concerning the nature of the data, this study classifies as quantitative and qualitative. The methodology used for data collection was questionnaires and interviews, and the data examination will be through subject analysis. This way, the Municipal Department of Education presents several shortcomings with regard to public policies for school libraries, such as: the absence of internal policies, the lack of a profissional librarian, the lack of an integrated system of the school libraries, the inadequate use of existing policies among others. It is concluded that the suggesting program presents strategies of performances and organization for the school library, aiming the installation of an integrated system of school libraries, (SIBE) in the city of Juazeiro do Norte.
