Abstract

Organ transplantation aims to save and/or improve the quality of life. However, there are no organs available for all potential recipients, and it results in significant mortality of patients on the waiting list. Educational actions on this theme - still so little discussed in Brazil - are necessary to change the current reality, since the will of the deceased donor must be declared solely and exclusively through his family, which is the central purpose of the Extension Project entitled “Organ Donation: a dialogue that can save lives” promoted by medical students from the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG). Therefore, meetings were held with three hundred and seventy-seven students from elementary and high school, with a general objective of raising awareness in society about organ donation. In those meetings, basic topics about the donation and transplantation process were addressed, in addition to the application of identical questionnaires before and after the lectures to assess the effects on the target students of the project. Through the data collected, it was found that the impact that the project produced on the students was positive, since they, in general, managed to assimilate most of the information exposed and, consequently, modified their responses in questionnaire two.
