Actions with the elderly to prevent COVID-19
Abstract
The elderly population was considered the most affected during the pandemic, due to the reduction in immunity, comorbidities, and the complexity of the prevention strategies for SARS-Cov-2 infection. The main purpose of the present report is to describe the experience of the practical nursing students in promoting healthcare education aiming the self-care to prevent transmission and infection by SARS-Cov-2. This is a descriptive study based on the report of students participating in an extension project that aimed at promoting health education as a strategy to prevent COVID-19 among the elderly population. Among the 717 (100%) telephone contacts, 277 calls (38.6%) were effectively answered, 156 (21.8%) participants refused to take part in the survey and 284 (39.6%) calls were not answered after, at least, three contact attempts. The participation of the practical nursing students in this project allowed the development of welcoming and bonding practices with the local community.
